Pie’n’Mash is a much-loved traditional cuisine that thrives despite prevailing media narratives of the tradition ‘dying’. The food is a central part of Cockney identity, and like its cultural heritage, has witnessed many profound changes influenced by greater geographical, economic, and social mobility, and the challenge of declining footfalls in high streets.
This report – featuring forewords from comedian Rob Beckett and Rebecca Earle, Professor of History at Warwick University – proposes a seven point plan for a successful and sustainable future for pie n mash and is intended to start conversations and spark longer-term thinking about creating a successful and sustainable future for the famous old dish. The report is a collaboration between Grow Social Capital and the Bengali East End Heritage Society, our partners on the Modern Cockney Festival.
