Fewer people get involved in civic and community life, while community stalwarts face burn-out through lack of volunteers and support.
To be a more effective changemaker in your community, you need to be savvier in harnessing the power of your networks and groups. Be more astute in spotting potential talent and helpers, making it easier for them to say ‘Yes’ and harder to say ‘No’ to help you and your cause.
What is a Tummler?
‘Tummler’ is an old Yiddish word to describe someone who would be hired to get a party going – literally.
We have all been to parties where the music is playing but there’s nobody on the dancefloor. The Tummler’s role was to spark the party: identifying early movers, encouraging, cajoling, nudging people to get up on the dancefloor. Once the dancefloor is full and the party is buzzing, the Tummler would quietly leave.
We think a Tummler is a good metaphor for community changemaking. We need more Tummlers to create change.
Learning objectives – learners will:
- Acquire a toolkit of new techniques for identifying potential changemakers (‘Power of the Few’)
- Understand what inhibits people from getting involved and avoid wasting time on the inert
- Understand the Rogers Curve and apply it to growing your community of changemakers
- Be more confident and assertive in how they motivate themselves and others to act
